IN THE BEGINNING...
A thousand years ago, the Vikings journeyed from their homes across the Atlantic Ocean to Maine, a journey they made at the behest of Odin, one of their Gods. During their journey, they landed first at Holy Island, an island off the coast of the UK, and raided Lindisfarne Monastery. There they found Excalibur, which they could describe only as a sword.
The Vikings encountered the Fog, an airborne version of the Filth as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean, yet Excalibur kept it at bay from their ship. After they had landed, the Fog enclosed Solomon Island, and did not dissipate for a year.
The Wabanaki were already battling the Mayans by the time the Vikings arrived. Many of the Wabanaki warriors lost their lives in the first battle with the Mayans, and the Wabanaki were afraid that the second battle would destroy them all and leave the mountain (the Blue Ridge Mountain) unprotected.
The Blue Ridge Mountain contains a Gaia engine (later more easily accessible through the Blue Ridge Mine, founded in 1876), and it is this which the Wabanaki wards have protected for all of these years. Excalibur is the only item that can bypass the wards around it, and allow access to the engine, because it was used in their creation. The Mayans themselves sought the Gaia engine not for itself, but for its lubricant, the anti anima. The Filth, which they craved, and worshipped. The Wabanaki did not know at the time what was inside the mountain, only that it was a place not to go, and anyone who did go, was poisoned by what lay within.
The Mayans were finally defeated by the combined efforts of the Wabanaki and the Vikings, wielding Excalibur. Before its light, nothing could stand, and as dawn broke on the last day of fighting, what Mayans were left had fled. The wielder of Excalibur was a Viking known to the Wabanaki simply as 'The Varangian', which means in Norse 'The Viking'.
After the Fog dissipated, the Vikings returned home, across the Atlantic Ocean, and what would later be called the Sargasso Sea.

WHICH BRINGS US TO...
The cargo vessel Polaris, reported lost in the Sargasso Sea, August 14th 2007.
Some Norsemen made it across the Atlantic Ocean to their homes, but the rest, most notably the ship that bore Excalibur back across the waves, foundered in a dead zone of water in the Sargasso Sea, which is also known as the Bermuda Triangle. The sword could not push back the Filth this time, and the Norsemen were claimed by it.
The Filth, which in salt water becomes the substance known as Red Sargassum, mutated the Norsemen into the Draug. Even those Norsemen who did make it home did not escape, they were called back out to sea by the Siren Song of the Filth, and all became Draug.
The Polaris has been inhabited by the Draug - it has to be assumed that all of its original crew have been turned into incubators for more Draug, or otherwise disposed of.
Although Excalibur no longer rests beneath the waves (whose story is for another time), some of the Norsemen on board the ship which bore it have taken up in residence within the Polaris. Given that the Primordial Dweller has a 'strong psychic signature' it could be that originally, this was a Norse shaman, who helped prepare the wards that bound the mountain, however the most notable resident of the Polaris is The Varangian, who bore Excalibur.
